After the Sofitel Santa Clara, the Hyatt Regency and the Intercontinental Cartagena, I was curious to try the the Hilton Cartagena, which is « kind of famous » around Bocagrande, the modern part of Cartagena de Indias (a short 7000 pesos ride from the Old Town)

Although, I wanted to complete my Gold Status Challenge as soon as possible, so I needed an extra stay and figured it could be interesting to spend the night there, especially considering that :

  • Prices where ok due tu a Hilton Honors regional sale (although I got fuc£££ with that on my next stay at the Hampton, as it was a « non qualified rate » (completely not announced);
  • I’m registered for the Double points on stays (valid until 31 dec.)
  • I also put my Double Dip option to earn British Airways Avios , as there’s this promo until the 31st of August where you get 2000 bonus … per stay ! (on top of everything, and can be a 1 night stay).

So I booked a Club Room with Bay View (meaning a view on a lake, not the ocean), a better way to compare the offers between the Hyatt, the IC and the Hilton with similar products.

Or so I thought.

The lobby of the Hilton Hotel Cartagena – Colombia

Because if the Hyatt is amazing and the IC pretty good, I have to say I did not like my stay at the Hilton Cartagena. Even with the kindness of the executive club staff, everything is kind of old, cheap… and well, overpriced for 3 pools filled with people, dirt and a lot of floating things (the day I was there actually). I mean i LOVE to swim between two work sessions, that’s also a criteria when choosing hotels, and I have to say it was so full I’d rather leave.

To be 100% honest, i’m not familiar with the Hilton Brands, except for the one in Paris and the Waldorf Astoria in Versailles (both pretty good).

Or maybe it was a bad time with a lot of people, but I don’t like to have to wait that much for food or drinks all the time, especially in the lounge. The views are nice, but you will have to wait or ask regularly for things.

By the way, they seem to only serve glasses of wine and beers (you have to order every time), I did not see any premium alcohols or liquors served in the Exec Lounge. If you’re a gin tonic person I mean 🙂

Fruits and some snacks available during the day in the Executive Lounge

…or to see that there’s no coffee in room while there’s a coffee maker, or… you know… it felt more like an old resort with a name than a solid property, at least for Executive rooms and services.

The good thing would be the size of my room, which had a view on the lake behind the hotel, and the spacious bathroom, though it looked a lot like an accessible room (the bathtub and the shower).

Breakfast at the lounge was super poor (boiled eggs if you want proteins though), although you’ll get some fruits and coffee to start the day.

Then again, if you have some points to burn in Cartagena, why not ! But all in all, for club rooms in this area, I’d recommend the Hyatt Regency (closer to town and just awesome) or the IC.
